The American Board of Surgery (ABS)

The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to certify surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge. Surgeons certified by the ABS, known as diplomates, have completed at least five years of surgical residency training following medical school and successfully completed a written and oral examination process administered by the ABS.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)

The mission of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and maintenance of certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists. The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is one of 24 medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Through ABMS, the boards work together to establish common standards for physicians to achieve and maintain board certification. The boards were founded by their respective specialties to protect the public by assessing and certifying doctors who meet specific educational, training and professional requirements. Certification by The American Board of Plastic Surgery is “The Gold Standard” for plastic surgeons.

European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (EBOPRAS)

The European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (EBOPRAS) is the European equivalent of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and shares a similar mission in promoting safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and maintenance of certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.

Dr. Raffi Hovsepian is the first American plastic surgeon to be Board Certified by the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (EBOPRAS).

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is an organization of medical specialty boards with shared goals and standards related to the certification of medical specialists. The mission of the ABMS is to maintain and improve the quality of medical care by assisting the Member Boards in their efforts to develop and utilize professional and educational standards for the certification of physician specialists in the United States and internationally.

The intent of both the initial certification of physicians and the maintenance of certification is to provide assurance to the public that a physician specialist certified by a Member Board of the ABMS has successfully completed an approved educational program and evaluation process which includes components designed to assess the medical knowledge, judgment, professionalism and clinical and communication skills required to provide quality patient care in that specialty.
