How Does Botox® Work?

The muscles of our face are responsible for facial expressions like frowning and smiling. As we age, the repeated contractions of these muscles along with other changes in the skin, result in the wrinkles that we see. When Botox® Cosmetic is injected into a muscle, that specific muscle relaxes and becomes unable to contract temporarily for 4-6 months, thereby eliminating its pull on the skin and softening the wrinkles over this muscle.

With continued treatments of Botox® Cosmetic, new wrinkle formation is also prevented as repetitive muscle contractions which deepen facial lines over time are blocked. Aside from being an anti-aging treatment reducing wrinkles, Botox® Cosmetic can be used to reshape and rejuvenate facial features by altering the balance of muscles. An example of this is lifting the eyebrow or the corners of the mouth.

What are Common Uses of Botox®?

Dr. Raffi Hovsepian commonly uses Botox® Cosmetic for anti-aging when treating the vertical frown lines just above the nose, horizontal lines of the forehead, and crow’s feet. Additionally, Botox® Cosmetic may successfully be used for many other facial aesthetic enhancements such as vertical lip lines, neck bands, chin cobble stoning, and the bunny lines on the side of the nose. It can reshape the face by lifting the eyebrows, the corners of the mouth, and the lips. Botox® Cosmetic can also be used at the same time as other treatments and surgical procedures.

How is Botox® Cosmetic Treatment Performed?

Aesthetically treating facial wrinkles, injections are applied with a very fine needle that delivers small amounts of Botox® Cosmetic.

Commonly during injections, no anesthetic is required; instead a topical gel may be applied on the skin to provide temporary numbing of the area being treated. When you meet with Dr. Raffi Hovsepian, he will assess your needs carefully before guiding you toward an aesthetic enhancement plan that matches your desires. For some patients, it may be more appropriate to combine Botox® with another skin care or rejuvenation treatment, such as injectable dermal fillers, but in many cases Botox® will be sufficient to create the results you want.
