FAQ

Is plastic surgery safe?

All plastic surgery procedures are accompanied by a certain degree of risk, whether the procedures are for medical or cosmetic reasons. Our extensively trained surgical team is dedicated to making your operation go smoothly. We carefully review your medical history and current health condition before deciding if it is safe for you to proceed with surgery. It is important that you fully disclose all pertinent information so that we are able to make an accurate assessment of the risks involved. We will take every precaution necessary to reduce the possibility of any complications.

How do I know if plastic surgery is right for me?

There are several important factors that come into play when deciding whether aesthetic plastic or reconstructive surgery is the right option for you:

  • One of the most important factors is your health. Being in good health greatly reduced the risk of complications occurring during surgery and leads to a rapid recovery.
  • Next, you need to ask yourself what your motivations are. People who have plastic surgery generally find that the surgery enhances their overall appearance and self-esteem.
  • Third, you should have realistic expectations. Plastic surgery is both a science and an art, neither of which is perfect. Set reasonable goals as to the result you wish to achieve and be prepared to discuss these goals thoroughly during your initial consultation.

The best way to find out whether a facelift, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty or body contouring plastic surgery procedure is right for you is to schedule a consultation. Dr. Hovsepian will be happy to discuss your aesthetic enhancement goals and provide a clear assessment of your options. You can request a consultation online or schedule an appointment by telephone.

What happens during my initial consultation?

During your consultation we will discuss your desired aesthetic enhancement goals and expectations, review your medical history and current health, and make an assessment on whether the procedure(s) in question are right for you. This is a good time to ask specific questions about the procedure so that you are fully prepared, mentally and emotionally, for surgery.

Can I have several procedures performed simultaneously?

It is a relatively common practice for a plastic surgeon to perform multiple procedures during one operation. This allows the surgeon to better “sculpt” your final appearance. In addition, having several procedures done simultaneously saves you the expense of paying the operating room and anesthesia costs more than once.

However, for certain patients, having too much done at one time can lead to complications. The decision to have multiple procedures depends on which procedures are being performed, the extent of surgery, the operating time, and your age and health. Ultimately, Dr. Hovsepian decides whether or not it is appropriate to include more than one procedure in your operation.

Is my age a factor?

Due to the variety of procedures available in plastic surgery, there can be no blanket rule on age, although age will be taken into consideration when planning your operation. People of all ages have taken advantage of the image-enhancement offered by plastic surgery. There are even procedures, such as otoplasty that can be appropriate for young children.

However, it is important to realize the limitations of plastic surgery. Plastic surgery cannot “fix” every situation or reverse the aging process. What is a good procedure for one person may not be an appropriate procedure for another. Dr. Hovsepian is committed to making your aesthetic plastic surgery experience exclusive and second to none!

Where will I recover from surgery?

A consultation is the essential first step in your desire to refine, restore or enhance your appearance, whether surgically or through non-surgical treatments. It is mutually beneficial for you and Dr. Hovsepian to meet, discuss your goals and to ask questions, in order that he may provide an individualized recommendation. He will help you understand your treatment options and the resulting outcomes. Depending on the type of procedure, he will recommend at home recovery, hospital or surgical center recovery, or aftercare provider.

Can I choose where I will recover?

During your consultation, you and Dr. Hovsepian will discuss what is appropriate for your recovery and the choices you have to select for your recovery. Depending on the type of procedure, he will recommend at home recovery, hospital or surgical center recovery, or aftercare provider.

Who will care for me during my recovery?

If you are able to recover at home, you will be discharged with a responsible adult. You may also elect to have a private nurse care for you at home. At any of the recommended recovery centers, you will be cared for by licensed medical professionals specifically trained to care for post-surgical patients, who are under the supervision of a physician.

How long will it take to recover from my surgery?

Generally, post-operative instructions call for rest and limited movement in order to speed the healing process and recovery time. The length of recovery varies with each procedure and is different for each individual. When you come in for your consultation we can discuss your expected recovery period and any post-operative instructions in detail.

When will I see Dr. Hovsepian after my surgery?

You will see Dr. Hovsepian before you are released for your post-surgical care, whether your recovery will be at home or in a recovery center. When you are released a member of Dr. Hovsepian’s staff will fully explain the time and purpose of your next visit. On the evening of your procedure, Dr. Hovsepian will call or visit you to evaluate your progress and recovery.

What if I experience a complication or have questions?

You will be given a full listing of potential signs of complication, as well as normal conditions to experience during recovery. If you have questions at any time during your recovery, please contact us immediately. Dr. Hovsepian and his staff are readily available to take your calls and instruct you on what to do.

Are breast implants safe?

Breast implant safety has been a hot topic throughout the last few decades. As a result, more stringent standards have emerged in order to protect patients. Both saline and silicone gel filled implants are available, and the appropriate choice of breast implants in a breast augmentation procedure will depend on a number of factors which Dr. Hovsepian will discuss with you personally.

Rarely will a breast implant rupture or leak. With saline breast implants, the saline solution is safely re-absorbed into the body, and in the case of the new cohesive silicone gel breast implants, in the unlikely event of a rupture the soft form-stable gel will maintain its shape without leaking into the body, and the implant can then be removed. If rupture or leaking is detected early, the implant can be easily replaced. The risk of these problems is low, and Dr. Hovsepian takes extra precautions in implementing techniques that help prevent these types of complications. A free lifetime product replacement warranty is included with each breast augmentation procedure; details of which are reviewed with you during your consultation by the Aesthetic Coordinator.

Our extensively trained team is dedicated to making your operation a smooth one, and with each of our aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures we take every precaution necessary to reduce the possibility of complications.
